The Best Food for a Healthy Smile

We often take our teeth and gums for granted, but the health of our mouth is important to the rest of the body. Brushing and flossing provide a great foundation for oral health. And using a water flosser can provide even more protection for our gums. When it comes to visiting the dentist, twice a year visits are key to keeping our gums and teeth in good health. It’s also important to keep in mind that the foods we eat play a major factor in our oral health.

We all know that we should avoid food and drinks containing high amounts of sugar. But what foods can have the greatest impact on the health of our mouths?

How to Keep Teeth and Gums Healthy

Omega-3Omega fish products rich foods support a healthy inflammatory response. Choose salmon or sardines, which provide a higher dose than other fish varieties. Not only are they a rich source of omega-3s, but they also contain calcium. For those who may not consume fish frequently, taking a cod liver oil or fish oil supplement can be helpful. Omega-3 fish oils are offered in liquid varieties that can be added to yogurt, oatmeal, or a smoothie. Chia seeds and flaxseeds contain smaller amounts but can still be beneficial to overall health. 

Speaking of yogurt, the calciums Search Calcium products it contains is good for strengthening the teeth, and the good bacteria in yogurt promotes a healthy gastrointestinal tract. Just steer clear of heavily sweetened yogurt. Choose unsweetened, such as Greek yogurt.

For vegetarians, calcium can also be found in leafy greens like kale, spinach, and collard greens. One cup of cooked greens delivers around 20% of our daily requirement of calcium. We can add leafy greens to smoothies, include them in salads, or serve them cooked as a main dish.

Foods high in catechins can support healthy teeth. Foods highest in this plant compound that also have antioxidant properties are green tea, strawberries, apples, and blackberries.

Crunchy fruits and vegetables often have a high-water content, which helps to offset the sugar they may contain and stimulates saliva which buffers acid. Think of apples, pears, pineapple, pomegranate seeds, celery, radishes, carrots, and jicama. Too much acidity in the mouth can be harmful to tooth enamel.

Vitamin DVitamin D product is also important for teeth and gum health. Look for vitamin D fortified foods, or opt for a daily supplement.

While having healthy teeth and gums makes us look great, it can also be a window to our inner wellbeing.
