Fish Oil Provides 24-Hour Control of Circulating Blood Fat Levels

2/1/2008

Evidence suggests that postprandial (after a meal) elevations in blood triglycerides increase the risk for cardiovascular disease, yet the current healthcare system only monitors fasting triglyceride levels. A recent study, presented at the July ISSFAL meeting in Australia, measured the effect of fish oil on blood triglyceride levels over a 24 hour period.

After three weeks of fish oil use by overweight male subjects, a 29 to 34% reduction in 24-hour circulating triglyceride levels was observed. These findings suggest that daily fish oil consumption may offer 24 hour risk reduction through increased triglyceride control.
