Fish Oil and Macular Degeneration
Among a group of 681 male twins in their mid 70's, researchers found 222 twins with intermediate or late stage Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). In studying the twins, they concluded:
AMD is nearly twice as common in elderly smokers versus non-smokers.
Those who eat fish at least twice a week are less likely to have AMD then those eating fish once a week.
AMD is rarer in people whose diets are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
A second 5-year study of 2,335 people over age 49 who ate fish at least once a week were 40 percent less likely to develop early-stage AMD.
Dr. Seddon, researcher in the first study by Harvard Medical School, stated that the American diet has a 10:1 to 50:1 overbalance intake of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids.
