Dietary Supplement - Related Adverse Events (DSAE)

The July 15, 2005 issue of the same Society's Journal states that an estimate of 100.4 million Americans were using vitamin and mineral supplements every day in the year 2000. They relate 22,929 DSAEs were reported in 2002.
The data on a total of 1,183 telephone calls to the California Poison Control Center relating to dietary supplements resulted in 355 calls excluded as not applicable. Of the 828 calls remaining, 480 were classified as adverse effects – of which 353 were ephedra containing products. Only one death occurred in a 34 year old woman (with a repeated history of alcohol and substance abuse) who took an overdose of a dietary supplement product (Xenadrine).
